Finally! A Payoff

After all my years of movie watching, I finally got a payoff that heretofore will justify my past (or future) lack of discrimination. No longer do I need bemoan how much time I waste/have wasted watching films.

My actress daughter has asked me to help her "catch up" on actress performances of note by recommending  films I think are worth her time. Aside from being pleased she values the opinion of her old fart/non acting father, this project means I can put to good use some of the notes I've made over the years about favorite movies. And the project also allows me to guiltlessly revel in the past; my daughter has already seen many of the great contemporary film performances by actresses.

The first two films I recommended to her were Michael Tolkin's singular vision "The Rapture" (1991) starring Mimi Rogers and Woody Allen's little seen "Another Woman" (1988) starring Gena Rowlands. If you've not seen them, you missed two towering performances. But the reason I'm blogging about this project is because maybe you've seen an actress performance this film geek missed. I'll need lots of titles; the project has no expiration date. Yippee!!

  1. A huge standout performance from Naomi Watts in David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive" (2001). Yikes! Her scene with Chad Everret is, um, scorching without anyone removing any clothing!

    1. Steve; Good call, although I'm not entirely comfortable recommending it to my daughter. But, if she happens to read the comments trail here and picks up on it, I won't feel as creepy. That is, as long as she doesn't want to discuss it with me!

  2. Hi,Pat. Yeah, Lynch, dicey. Karen suggests some great female performances she recollects: All the women in Woody's "Interiors", almost anything by Meryl Streep, Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, "The Miracle Worker", Joanne Woodward, "Sybil", Mary Tyler Moore, "Ordinary People", Helen Miren, "Prime Suspect", Diane Lane, "Unfaithful", Laura Linney, "The Big C" (Showtime series,Season 1 out on disc). Best regards, Steve

  3. Hi Pat Betsey here, Dan thought a response is more up my ally. Mary Badham in "To kill a Mockingbird" as Scout and also her performance along with Natalie Wood in "This Property is Comdemned" ok any movie with Natalie. Also Liz Taylor in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". Nicole Kidman in the "The Hours". I'll give this some more thought and get back to ya.

    1. Hey Betsy; Some great ideas here. Ali has seen "Mockingbird" but I will definitely add Natalie Wood to my list. You helped me remember how great she was in "Splendor in the Grass". And Liz and Nicole - good stuff. Thanks.

    1. Thanks anonymous. I'm guessing you're the same person who responded to my 12/18/11 post called "Out Of It On Africa" by giving me a link to an Atlantic magazine article. If so, thanks for that and also (on behalf of my daughter) for this list.
