#74: The Mt. Rushmore Series

Even for those less music-obsessed than me, certain songs are guaranteed to conjure a specific time in a life. In my experience, the same applies for books - both for casual readers and bookworms - and for movies, cinephile or otherwise.

For this iteration of Mt. Rushmore, I'd like to hear which specific detail - mundane or off-the-curve - is so inextricably linked to a movie that you immediately recall that film when that detail presents itself. My monument is listed chronologically backwards by date of the film's release. You'll soon understand why. List your monument however you choose.

1.) Detail: Port-a-potty. Film: Slumdog Millionaire. The direct inspiration for this post came during our just finished visit to Yosemite National Park. As I entered one particularly dingy port-a-potty, a scene from early in Danny Boyle's 2008 film wouldn't let me go. From there, it was easy for this movie geek to come up with three more details that simply can't be linked to any other film.

2.) Detail: Hedge maze. Film: The Shining. Even money you knew what film I would name before I did so. I submit anyone who saw Stanley Kubrick's 1980 adaptation of the Stephen King novel will never be able to separate a hedge maze - or the deranged look in Jack Nicholson's eyes - from that film.

3.) Detail: Phone booth. Film: The Birds. Although phone booths have been featured in many movies, if you saw Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 film even once, I think you'll agree this detail and that film cannot be separated. Film buffs: Check out High Anxiety, Mel Brooks's hysterical 1977 homage to Hitchcock, phone booth included.

4.) Detail: Shower. Film: Psycho. Within seconds after connecting port-a-potty to Slumdog Millionaire, shower = Psycho came to me. Since 1960, no year has ever passed without that shower scene crossing my mind at least one time. I suspect I'm not alone.

If you can't come up with four, don't stress. Make one or more nominations. Unrepentant movie junkie that I am, I'd love to hear what comes to you.

  1. Off the top of my head--any time I hear the word "inconceivable" I think Princess Bride. But the best part--the answer: "I don't think that word means what you think it means." How true that is for countless other things as well.

    1. Regina; Thanks for the comment. Look for an e-mail from me with the link to an earlier iteration of my Mt. Rushmore series. Care to guess which movie (if not the exact same line of dialogue as you quoted above) I featured in that earlier post?

  2. I wish I hadn't spent so much time being upset about political/otherwise situations that I had no control over. That continues to be a challenge for me.

    1. Anonymous; I'm guessing you mistakenly posted this thinking you were responding to my last post - "Glad I Did; Wish I Hadn't". No matter; I appreciate the comment anyway. Intriguing that your "wish I hadn't" continues to be a challenge for you; my "wish I hadn't" also occasionally rears its ugly head as well.

  3. Hello Pat. June and has come and gone, July has started, and I find myself playing catch up once again .. Where does the time go ?
OK ... For this one I may need to deviate a little from what you're looking for in response, but ...
My lovely wife and I will recite lines from specific films depending on situations we find ourselves in. We are particularly fond of reciting lines from 'Arthur' (one of our all time faves), 'The Devil Wears Prada', 'The Wizard Of Oz', 'Help' ( you have to experience Rose and her sister reciting this movie line by line, by memory, with little, if any, mistakes. It's fun to watch.
Detail - Dinner - Definitely 'Arthur' when he's out to dinner with the woman his father wants him to marry
Detail - Waiting for traffic to move - The Evil Wears Prada - hearing Meryl Streep simply say the word 'Go' captures the moment perfectly
Detail - Being hungry - Always the talking trees throwing apples in The Wizard Of Oz
Detail - Having to get someone to get up and get something - 'Go To The Window' from Help
    Be well,
    Bob

    1. Hey Bob; First off, let me say a huge thanks for your unwavering support of my blog for the past few years. I look forward to your regular comments for several reasons not least of which is because I've gotten to know you better via those comments. Second, please comment only when you think of it, never give a thought to "catching up" and most of all, don't let commenting on my blog become an item on your "to do" list or a chore. Now for today, I have to say we are pretty aligned here even if you did "stray" a bit. Mostly because one of my most quoted movie lines of all times comes from "Arthur" when John Gielgud deadpans "I'll alert the media" at something inane Arthur says aloud. Absolutely a classic AND I'm about to re-issue an earlier iteration of Mt. Rushmore with four lines of unforgettable dialogue and that line will definitely be one of them; keep an eye out for that post, film geek. The only place I'm confused in this comment of yours is the line "Go to the window" from "Help". Are we talking about the Beatles film? If so, I must admit not knowing of that line, unlike everything else you referenced here, one film nerd to another. (Not only is this a record day for your comments, this reply to you is also record length from me to ANYONE in almost 15 years of blogging; not sure I should be bragging about that, BTW.)
