Good Company

Over our nearly forty-eight-year history, my wife and I have had some of our worst and our best moments while in an automobile. The worst moments have often been connected to my driving habits. The best moments have frequently occurred on one of the many extended road trips we've taken.

This morning, while she slept in the passenger's seat on our return from central Pennsylvania, I began reflecting on earlier road trips. Some things have changed since 1978 - the cars, the ways we listen to music, the games we play to pass the time. Much has stayed the same - the ease of conversation and comfort with silence, our planning for the future, lots of laughter.

I've always enjoyed long-distance driving. For almost a half-century now, almost all of my road trips have had an added benefit - the company of someone I endlessly enjoy.

  1. This is such a nice sentiment - it's so good to be able to enjoy the ride with you.

  2. Hey Pat. Driving has always been enjoyable for me. The freedom it provided way back when, the times Epcot with friends, my lovely wife, kids, now grandkids. I love driving, although my lovely wife would say that someone needs to work on their patience at times - lol. Way back when - in my 20's - I took a number of solo trips via automobile. I drove to Atlanta, Florida, Chicago, Iowa, Boston ... All solo and all to spend time with dear friends. Some would have been faster if I would have flown, but .. the cost was prohibitive and flying would not have been as much fun.
    Be well,
    Bob

    1. Hey Bob; Sorry it took me longer than usual to respond. For some unknown reason the above didn't come to the top of my comments thread so I just now stumbled across it while looking for something else from some recent posts. In any case, I guess we're long-distance driving soulmates, huh? So far I've driven across country twice (1972, 2000) hitchhiked all the way across once (1978) and halfway another time (1974), and I most recently did a Southern States Swing in 2021 to be sure I visited the last two of the fifty States I'd never slept in before that (Alabama and Mississippi). That trip helped me realize a goal I set for myself upon graduating high school in 1967 to visit all fifty states at least once. And, that last longer trip occurred after you & I got acquainted. Matter of fact, by that time you were already regularly commenting on my blog meaning that extended road trip of three weeks may sound vaguely familiar to you. Happy trails!
