Back To The Future

 I vote because ..

How would you complete that sentence? When I took my first training-for-trainers class for "Get Out the Vote" in February, I was pleased to be a part of an important educational effort. While preparing to take a second training - virtually this time - I began reflecting on the record turnout in the recent presidential election. Until then, I don't think I appreciated how much I've missed teaching about issues that matter to me, issues that directly affect the kind of future our children will inherit.

Teaching music classes at local colleges for the last six years has been exhilarating. My involvement in "Get Out the Vote" - as the recent turnout amply demonstrated - can make a difference. I've missed doing work like that.

Any reader interested in helping support this effort - sponsored by the League of Women Voters - let me know. Do so via a comment here, an offline e-mail, or a phone call, if I know you personally. I'd be thrilled to direct you to ways you can help.

  2. Thanks, Pat, for spreading the word. Our goal at Energizing Young Voters is to have every 18-29 year old become a lifelong voter and move from the role of student to citizen. We believe civic engagement can't stop once we cast that vote if we are to keep the world safe for democracy. Thanks for contributing to that effort in multiple ways. May I add, anyone interested in learning more can contact us at energizingyoungvoters@gmail.com.

    1. Unknown; Thanks for your comment and including that e-mail. And, you're welcome, although thanking me was unnecessarily gracious. I'm thrilled to help in any way I can.

  3. I too vote because every vote counts. Years ago I listened to an audio tape of a woman from Australia (name escapes me) who said that voting there was mandatory i.e., it was a civic duty not a "privilege." Interesting concept.....

    1. Ines; According to world atlas, voting is mandatory in almost a dozen nations worldwide. https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/countries-with-mandatory-voting.html Thanks, as always, for your comment and, in this case, thanks also for echoing Kim's comment.

  4. From the time I was first eligible to Vote, I’ve Voted. The only time there was a break was when I was a registered Independent (for professional reasons at the time) and was not able to cast a vote during primary season. I’ve always been amazed when I read about low percentages of Voter turnout. It’s obvious now, more than ever before, that voting is so much more important. For everyone. And I am very interested in helping support this effort. Thanks for sharing this, Pat.
