More Than Just Dinner

Though I wasn't ready to be a parent until relatively late in life, it's impossible for me to now imagine a life without my daughter. She and her mother are my best friends.

I know feeling this way about a child is commonplace. But sometimes, the intensity of my gratitude for what my daughter has brought to my life feels anything but commonplace. Even knowing that parents from the beginning of time the world over have cherished and been cherished by their children does not diminish how special I feel. How can this be?

Taking in her beautiful smile - a trait she clearly inherited from her mother - and enjoying the effortless interaction the three of us shared at dinner earlier tonight delivered me to my current state of grace. If you've been as fortunate as me in this regard, I'd welcome hearing of a moment from your story, no matter if it happened today or long ago.

  1. Your love and gratitude are palpable. Being a parent is rewarding on some many levels and being a grandparent is equally so! I too am grateful.

  2. Good morning, Pat. Hearing how you speak about your daughter is definitely something I, and I'm sure most if not all parents, share. The wonder in their eyes as they see things for the first time, the wonder in my eyes as I watch this things happening, is well beyond any descriptive terms I could use to properly do it justice. And it was true for both my children. When my daughter was born, I remember saying to her mom that this is great, this is enough. This is all I'll ever need. But I cannot ever imagine my life without also having my son. And watching them grow, learn, experience ... again more than any words I have could do it justice. And, something that you and Kim may one day also experience, seeing it through the eyes of my grandsons. In some ways it is different. But is many ways, exactly the same.
    Be well,
    Bob

    1. Bob; Thanks for the heartfelt comment and thanks (again) for tying your previous record with five comments in one day. And I'm indeed looking forward to being a grandparent one day.
